Earhart’s freckles, TIGHAR on Nikumororo, the BEST bank commercial ever aired, Tomatino in Spain, Waits/Bukowski, and not much more…

Anti-freckle cream jar on a small island? Earhart’s?

That discovery wasn’t in the book, Lost. Or I missed it. Lost was the most tantalizing of the Amelia Earhart books, to me, and the most well-researched I’d read. (July blog)

Similar jar (L) found in pieces on Nikumororo, but not milk-glass. Could have been an earlier version of the ointment…

Earhart disliked her freckles (many others, including me, found them attractive) and, indeed, may have used such a treatment. No one is counting on it, but lesser clues have resulted in exhaustive searches and big bucks allotted to them. The History Blog has a very interesting take on it. (Link)

Both the NatGeo and the TIGHAR (The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery) teams have spent a good deal of time on Nikumororo, a tiny island in the Pacific, and TIGHAR is returning in October, 2026. (Update coming when available.)

They have mapped the area extensively and believe it to be the place where Earhart’s plane will be finally found underwater.

Several remains-finding dogs have all gone to the same small spot on the island but nothing identifiable was found. Read Lost: Amelia Earhart's Three Mysterious Deaths and One Extraordinary Life and you’ll see why such extensive searches are being carried on.

Another mystery:

The best bank commercial ever, and I can’t show it to you…yet

A window sort of like this one…

A fantastic bank commercial circa 80’s Los Angeles is still a mystery but the hunt is on. Again. I’ve looked for it off and on for years; it caused me to use the bank during my years in L.A. and I want to see it again.

Picture a birdseye view of a stately mansion, Cam moves rapidly to a leaded-glass window, enters a walnut-panelled study in which a well-dressed, grandfatherly, slightly overweight man sits with a child on his knee. The child is rapt and the man is telling him, “…and remember, money isn’t everything.”

There is a beat, during which the child looks up at the man, questioningly.

“Just kidding” says the man. Child looks relieved. Cut to bank logo.

I loved it, never forgot it.

Of all the TVC’s I’ve ever seen, or had to do with, I wished I had done this one. I wanted to find it for this August blog, and share it, but came up empty.

I enlisted Robert Lovy’s help on this, as he is a native Angeleno, surfer, filmmaker, and was a contemporary adguy at Saatchi & Saatchi during the time the TVC aired. He used ChatGPT to come up with this: (Link)

Impressive. I’m kind of a neanderthal anti-AI person, but this opened my eyes to its actual use, or one of them. Robert typed in some good info and ChatGPT answered. Rather intelligently. So I’m closer to solving the mystery, and when I do, you’ll see the result. Thanks Robert. Thanks ChatGPT.

You say tomahto, I say run the other way…

Yayyyy! It’s Tomatino Time in Spain. Safer than running with the bulls but really, really messy…

It’s August in Buñol, Spain. You arrive at your hotel. As you step from the limo, splat! You just got hit by a very ripe, soft tomato. The thrower is congratulated by his/her compatriots and splat! Again. They all laugh and rummage around for another tomato.

You are taking part in a tradition that started in 1945 and no one even offers to have your outfit laundered. Hey, it’s kind of an honor. What is your problem, turista/turisto? Well, that’s a bit of an exaggeration; they probably wouldn’t include you without your consent or provocation, but you’re welcome to join in.

Wander Trivia explains, sort of: “Every August in the small town of Buñol, Spain, thousands gather for one simple mission: to throw tomatoes at complete strangers. Why? No one fully agrees, and that somehow makes it better.”

What Wikipedia knows about La Tomatina. (Link) And a short YouTube shows the tomato-pasting mayhem. (Link).

Tom Waits reads Bukowski. This’ll cool you off…

Two giants out standing in their fields in the snow. Well worth a look and a listen. The image above is just a screen capture; clicking it will get you nowhere, but this (Link) will take you away, I guarantee. If this don’t cool yer jets in the dog days of August heat, yer jets are uncoolable.

And, this month’s music offering

Nothing special, except to some of us who can remember first hearing the Byrd’s version of Mr. Tambourine Man and it was. Special somehow. So were the Sixties. Again, the above is a screenshot so click here to give it a listen (Link).

Final thoughts in closing

I was born in August. What were they thinking, naming me Guinotte? Why not August? Then, all this time, 88 years worth I could have gone by Augie. “Hey Augie, let’s go grab a beer.” Or “Cheer up, Augie, it ain’t the end of the world.” (When Harley sold out to AMF) Anyway, Guinotte it is. Named after a good man. And we wish you a healthy, happy, calm ending to a strange summer.
